Fans of The Great British Bake Off were shocked to see host Matt Lucas looking strikingly different, thanks to some stunning weight loss, during this week’s season premiere.
Matt Lucas’s appearance on the Great British Baking Show premiere showed off his weight loss.
In a Twitter post last month, the 48-year-old said that he decided it was time to get in shape after seeing himself on television.
“I was already pretty big and then I went into a large white tent and ate most of the cake inside,” Lucas tweeted. “Then I saw myself on telly and thought ‘I can barely fit on the screen’ and realised [sic] it was time to do something about it.”
In a recent interview with Gabby Logan of the Mid.Point Podcast, Matt Lucas elaborated on why he decided to make some lifestyle changes.
I’m 48, my dad died when he was 52, very suddenly, his dad died I think at 56, so I was looking at the law of averages here.
“I was very big and I was getting bigger in the pandemic actually. Sort of not being very active, not really going out, not seeing people, just eating a lot of roast potatoes.
The thing is if you’re big, and by the way I’ve still got a proper tummy, I’m not skinny, by any means, I’ve just lost some weight, I’ve gone from maybe a double XXL, sometimes triple XXXL, down to a medium now I think.”

What is Matt Lucas’s secret to success?
Echo reports that the star maintains his weight loss with long walks along the canal near his home. While he does still eat occasional sweet, he has reigned in his eating habits.
Way to go, Matt!

Matt Lucas joined the Great British Bake Off team in 2020, taking over hosting duties from Sandy Toksvig. Toksvig and Noel Fielding joined the show in 2017 after longtime hosts Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins exited.
Lucas admittedly isn’t a baker himself and had never seen Bake Off when he was called to audition for the role.
“I had never even seen the show until I went really to try out for it…I got this call on the Friday saying, would you test for the Bake Off? And I said, I’ve never seen the Bake Off. I know it’s really, really popular, but I mainly watch soccer and documentaries,” Lucas admitted. “So my agent said, well, look, just watch an episode tonight and if you like it, you can test on Tuesday.”
Lucas told NPR that he went out to dinner with his family then went home and watched an episode for the first time. One episode turned into another one and another one.
Lucas said, “I thought, wow, this show’s brilliant!”
And, as they say, “the rest is history.”
