After an underwhelming 13th season of The Great British Baking Show, changes are on the way.
The Great British Baking Show, a beloved Netflix binge-watch show, has captivated millions with its charming, low-stakes appeal. Unlike other reality competition shows, the Baking Show (known as the Great British Bake Off across the pond) features amateur bakers and challenges that provide a backdrop for endearing mishaps and cheesy jokes.
However, after a less than successful 13th season, fans have expressed concern that the challenges have become too difficult. The show’s producers seem to be listening and plan to strip the show back to basics while adding a few twists to the upcoming season.
According to an inside source, last year’s season “did not work,” and the upcoming season must be improved to maintain the success of the franchise. The insider revealed the next season will likely be more reminiscent of early seasons of The Great British Baking Show with easier tasks and more classic bakes.
“There is a realization last year’s show didn’t really work. We’re going to strip it back to basics, with a few twists,” the source said, via the Mirror.
Season 13, which aired in 2022, became the series’ lowest-rated season since moving to Channel 4 in 2017. The low ratings have reportedly been a cause of concern for the producers.

Executive Producer Richard McKerrow confirmed concerns in a recent interview with The Media Podcast with Matt Deegan, calling the latest season “not our strongest” and stating that the challenges may be too complicated.
“Heading into Season 14, you have to take a look at it and think, ‘S***, [are] the challenges too complicated?’” McKerrow reportedly told Deegan. McKerrow candidly called the latest season of GBBO “not our strongest,” but ensured that producers are ready to make the necessary tweaks to improve the upcoming season. “We’re looking very, very, very hard at making sure it’s as good a series as it can be,” he said.
The show’s judges have also commented on the difficulty level of the challenges. Paul Hollywood commented on a similar issue in 2019, stating that the series had scaled back a little bit. The details of the process of “scaling back” are unknown, but the show’s producers are looking to make necessary tweaks to improve the upcoming season.
One of the most obvious Great British Baking Show changes will include the replacement of host Matt Lucas. Lucas, who acted as host alongside Noel Fielding for 3 seasons, announced his departure from the show in December 2022. Read more about Lucas’s departure HERE.
